IUD

IUD Insertion

IUDs (short for Intrauterine Devices) are a form of female contraception that can also be used for controlling heavy menstrual bleeding or supporting Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). IUDs are frequently selected by women in Australia and around the globe due to their safety and dependability. They’re typically effective for five years, after which replacement is possible with a new device.

If you think an IUD may be a suitable option for you, the first step is to make an appointment with one of our GPs who does IUD insertion. They will assess your suitability and answer any questions you may have regarding the device and how it works.

The Process of Getting an IUD

Our clinic requires you to have a total of three appointments when getting an IUD. Each of these appointments must be with the same GP.

  • Initial Consultation – In this 30 minute appointment, you’ll be provided with more information about IUDs and get the opportunity to ask questions. A pelvic examination will be conducted, and vaginal swabs and a smear may also be done.
  • Insertion Consultation – This 30 minute appointment takes place in the treatment room and is attended by your doctor and one of our Practice Nurses. Your results from the previous appointment will be discussed and you’ll be asked to provide consent for the insertion procedure. The IUD will then be inserted.
  • Follow-Up Consultation – To ensure your IUD isn’t causing you any issues, we’ll check in with you during a 10 minute appointment approximately six weeks after insertion. We’ll carry out a quick examination and answer any questions you might have about your IUD.
